Police in Migori county are investigating an incident where custom officers over the weekend saved a one month old baby while being reportedly being smuggled to Tanzania.

Custom officers at the Kenya-Tanzania border at the Isebania One Border Post over the weekend saved the one-month-old baby, and arrested three suspected smugglers.

They confirmed that the baby was of the male gender, adding that the suspects, two Kenyans and a Tanzanian national, tried to bribe their way through the Migori county post.

Confirming the incident, Customs and Border Control Commissioner Kevin Safari said that the baby is in good condition and is being housed at the customs office.

“The infant appeared to be in good health and is currently in the care of the Customs Office pending further investigations by the Police,” he said.

Safari noted that identification and sim cards were also confiscated from the suspects, adding that cases of human trafficking have been on the rise lately.

He said that aliens Kenyans have been nabbed in Kenya while being sneaked into Tanzania and South Africa, most being from Burundi, Uganda, Somalia, Ethiopia and Eritrea.

He added thsat on most occasions, the aliens are facilitated by their states.

Safari added that in the case of the baby, it has become a norm for Kenyan infants to be smuggled into Tanzania, issued with birth certificates and later brought back.
