A section of Muslim leaders in Uasin Gishu County has faulted Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) across the country for rejecting the Punguza Mizigo bill.
The bill was fronted by Thirdway Alliance Kenya party leader Dr Ekuru Aukot.
According to Uasin Gishu Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK) chairman Sheikh Abubakar Bini, the move is a mockery to Kenyans.
“As Muslim leaders, we are not happy with the move by MCAs of rejecting the bill. This shows that they are selfish and do not have common mwananchi problems at heart. Our anger will be subjected to County Assemblies for not passing it,” said Bini who spoke to the press in Eldoret town on Monday.
“We congratulate Uasin Gishu and Turkana for being the only County Assemblies that passed the Punguza Mizigo bill. This shows that they implement what people want,” he added.
The CIPK chairman, however, said they will not stop and called on religious leaders to sensitize Kenyans on which way they will change the constitution so as to benefit.
He pointed out that Kenyans are currently suffering.
The Punguza Mizigo initiative advocated for the reduction of MPs from the current 416 to 147, removal of Woman Representatives and nominated leaders among other things.
The bill has since flopped after it failed to get the support of the required 24 County Assemblies.
