1. Install another WhatsApp
The problem might be, apparently, you are using an old version. Some WhatsApp apps won't warn or alert you about updating it. It will just stop working instead. It is upon you to update a new version. Go to Google play store and get yourself another app.
2. Turn off your VPN
VPN is a special tool that allows someone to hide their identities online, access WhatsApp in countries where it is not available and avoid regional contents restrictions.
However, when the VPN is on, it is usually difficult to make calls and access WhatsApp and therefore you will need to check your VPN. If it was on, turn it off.
3. Force stop and clear cache
Force stop will get rid of all process in the app, Linux process. Clear cache to erase all temporary files and data stored in the app. Be sure of accessing your app after clearing the cache.
4. Check your internet connection
If WhatsApp is still not working, checking your internet connection may solve the problem. If you are connected to WiFi, try turning it off then on.
