A gang of two robbers on Friday robbed priests and nuns after raiding a Catholic church in Alego Usonga sub-county in Siaya county.
The incident was confirmed by area County Commissioner Michael Ole Tialal, who said that the suspects broke into the church at about 8 pm before embarking on the robbery.
He told said that they robbed priests, nuns and visitors who had arrived from Uganda and who were in the convent of their phones and belongings, before escaping on a motorbike.
“The two robbers managed to get away with cellphones from the convent and the priest’s house. They probably thought that the visitors who had come to church from Uganda had brought some money,” he said.
He added that the criminals might have thought that the group from Uganda had brought some money, hence the raid, blaming the church for not alerting the police that it had visitors.
The police boss noted that the nuns were locked in one room as the robbers embarked on the job.
"They had not closed the doors although they should have also informed us they had visitors so that we could offer security. The nuns were locked up in a room when the robbers embarked on their business and left in a motorbike,” he said.
The incident came only days after a businessman was shot in the thigh in a botched robbery in the same region before he managed to wrestle the gun from them.
This marks just one of the many such incidences that have been reported in the region over the past few weeks.
