A statement to media outlets on Friday said that the malignant tumour had been dealt with in a definitive manner after a three-week course of treatment at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in New York.

"Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg today completed a three-week course of stereotactic ablative radiation therapy at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in New York City," the Supreme Court's statement read.

“The focused radiation treatment began on August 5 and was administered on an outpatient basis to treat a tumour on her pancreas. The abnormality was first detected after a routine blood test in early July, and a biopsy performed on July 31 at Sloan Kettering confirmed a localized malignant tumour.”

Justice Ginsburg has suffered from health scares in the past.

She had to undergo surgery on her left lung to remove cancer nodules in 2018.

The 86-year-old will continue to be monitored and undergo more tests. She is the second of only two women to be appointed to the Supreme Court.

Ginsburg's journey to the highest court in the land has been the subject of feature films, documentaries and books.

Her deteriorating health has been the subject of ongoing concern. She had to miss court sessions as she was undergoing treatment.
