The Mombasa County government is in the process of acquiring a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system to address the traffic menace in the county.
According to the county's transport executive Tawfique Balala, the devolved unit has since sealed a deal with the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) which will make the dream a reality by 2022.
He said the construction of study designs for the projects are almost complete, but will include the removal of power polls along Digo Road.
"We have already agreed with Kenya Power on that. Power cables will in the future be passed underground as we aim to have the project ready by 2022,” he said.
He added that plans are in place to expand the city's main road, and are also looking into how many of the seven roundabouts within the city are to be eliminated to make the project a success.
“According to the study, it was noted that the first thing that needs to be done is to seek expansion of the road to allow us get the dedicated lane for the BRT system,” he added.
Once the planning is complete, Balala said the county will begin with four buses.
The main road from Buxton to the Central Business District will also be made a dedicated lane for the buses.
