Just a day after students staged demos at Egerton University main campus leading to its indefinite closure, the students’ Association has spoken on what led to the unrest at the Campus on Wednesday.
Through Chair Henry Muriungi, the students association told the press that the demos were occasioned by the fact that the administration had failed to listen to their grievances concerning the registration of exams.
He also noted that after the administration failed to address the same, he called for peaceful demonstrations which turned rowdy.
“We had the issue of exam registration and we raised our concerns on the same as pertains some students but the administration failed to listen to us and that is how we ended up on demos,” said Muriungi.
This comes in the wake of protests by students over what they described as high fees.
The students for the better part of Wednesday engaged law enforcement officers in running battles as they protested the fee increment.
In a memo seen by Hivisasa, the university explained that the decision to close the institution was reached at after a meeting with members of the Senate.
"Following demands by the students over demands to sit for examinations without having cleared fee, the Senate at its 505th meeting held on Wednesday 4th December 2019 resolved to close the university with immediate effect until further notice,” Egerton University's memo to students read.
The memo that also announced the indefinite closure of the campus was signed by Professor Mwanarusi Saidi.
This is not the first time that the university has been indefinitely closed over student unrest.
In 2014, it was closed and students given hours to leave after they engaged in a strike.
