Calls for Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i to formally join the presidential race have continued to take shape with a section of Gusii leaders expressing confidence that he will succeed.
Dr Matiang'i is however yet to publicly declare interest in the race, even though he has often attended several functions planned by his close allies from the region.
On Friday at Bundo in Nyamira Township, a host of leaders from the region said Dr Matiang'i is fit to take over from President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Borabu MP Ben Momanyi slammed Tangatanga brigade from Nyamira, arguing that they should consider backing Dr Fred Matiang'i for the big seat.
"Long gone are those days when we should be following other people. Since independence, we have been ruled by Kikuyus and Kalenjins. It's time we chat our own path," he said.
"Those bringing them (other candidates) and asking you to cheer should be slammed. We have Dr Matiang'i who has shown will to take over," he said.
A furious Senator Okong'o Mogeni accused DP William Ruto's team of disrespecting Matiang'i, adding that the team is unwelcome to the region.
"They have been going around abusing him and they expect to come here and ask you to vote them. This is what we shall not tolerate," he said.
"In fact, some of them called him a cannibal. Murkomen even swore to beat Matiang'i in an MCA race. This shows that they fear him. It's time for us to support one of our own," he added.
A host of MCAs led by Majority Leader Duke Masira also backed Dr Matiang'i for the State House race during the funeral in the township ward.
In September this year, elected leaders from Nyamira led by Mogeni held a meeting at Mr Momanyi's residence where they vowed to endorse Matiang'i.
