The former Malawi President, who lost to Peter Mutharika in 2014, is in Nairobi for a women conference. She became the second woman President in Africa in 2012 after the death of Bingu Mutharika.

Liberia's Ellen Johnson, a close friend of Kenya like Banda, was the first female president and served for two terms in the tiny West Africa nation.

Team Embrace led by Gladys Wanga, Rachael Shebesh and Murang'a Woman Representative Sabina Chege, held a meeting with Banda in Nairobi over women leadership.

"Team @embrace_ke meeting HE Dr Joyce Banda this morning discussing women's leadership in Africa #EmbracingAfrica," tweeted Ms Wanga.

Their meeting comes amid ongoing one-third gender rule debate. On Sunday, Wanga, who is serving her second term in Homa Bay, decried stereotypes women undergo in politics.

"The standards are already high. You have to work twice as hard to get the same recognition. You have to deal with whether you're married, where you're married. If you're not married, it is a problem. If you're single it is a problem," she said in an interview.

But Gladys Shollei, who supports rival Inua Mama group, which backs DP William Ruto, believes that women should just fight for space like men.

"To say that I will support a candidate because she is a woman, no. I will support someone if I know she is competent and their vision and capability to take my country forward and meet the aspirations of Kenyans, then I will support her," she said in an interview.
