The county government of Garissa has formed a team that will seek to address flooding that has affected the county as rains continue in the region.

County Secretary Abdi M. Ali who chaired the meeting on Thursday said the team will put up measures to mitigate the effects of the heavy rains that has caused flash floods.

The committee will assess damages caused by flash floods in different parts of the county and recommend urgent intervention measures.

The recent heavy rainfall experienced in Garissa displaced families living in low-lying areas and some affected schools were closed.

“Farmers operating from River Tana basin had suffered most as their crop and equipment were destroyed by the flooding River,” said Abdi.

Abdi said the county government will work with other stakeholders to ensure victims receive foodstuffs, household items and other supplies.

Abdi lauded the commitment by private sector who have helped drought victims over the past year in the county adding that they should work with the county government to assist the flood victims.

Representatives from the Kenya Red Cross Society, UNHCR, World Food Programme (WFP), UNICEF, WomanKind and Islamic Relief Worldwide, Kenya attended the meeting.

UNICEF donated 686 family kits which included blankets, mattresses and kitchen utensils, 305 education kits that included tents, textbooks and chalk and another 676 bedsheets and over 800 sanitary materials for girls that will be dispatched to flood victims.

The department of Roads and Public Works will set aside funds to repair roads in all the affected areas.
