The Council of Governors (CoG) is set to declare its stand on whether to back the Building Bridges Initiative amid the Division of Revenue Bill Stand off.
Speaking on Wednesday at Mabomani grounds in Mumias, the chairman Wycliffe Oparanya said that the governors intend to meet to determine whether they will support BBI or continue rooting for the Ugatuzi initiative as counties face financial crisis following the stalemate between Senators and Members of Parliament over the allocation of funds to the regions.
Oparanya said that the crisis has affected the operations of most counties, adding that the governors are torn between a rock and a hard place.
Ugatuzi initiative was unveiled with the aim of lobbying for more resources to be channeled to the county governments but it is yet to bear fruits up to date.
He also said that it is absurd to notice that the county governments are not functioning as expected because of the lack of resources.
He noted that time has come for the Senators and MPs to resolve the stalemate so that they can resume operations normally.
Oparanya also said that the governors are rooting for a referendum that will ensure they are funded to achieve their agenda.
“We’re calling for a referendum because we want more resources to be channelled to counties. At the moment, our focus is to ensure devolution is strengthened so that ordinary Kenyans can benefit from improved services,” he said, as quoted by Daily Nation.
