Leah Chemnee, a 23-year-old mother of three, has painfully recounted how she lost her children in the landslides that hit Pokot South on Friday night.

Last she heard were her daughter's screams at 11 pm.

“As the house buckled, my daughter screamed attracting the attention of my in-laws who responded and rescued me. I lost three children who were swept to their death. Their bodies were found metres away from the house,” she said.

For Chepyatich Tuliareng, she has been left to take care of her neighbour's three children. The mother of the children was buried alive by the landslides while their father was left nursing serious injuries.

“The youngest, who is eight months old, broke his leg. The other four children have been treated and are responding well. The father of the children is the one admitted in critical condition,” Tuliareng noted.

Joseph Krop, on the other hand, has lost three out of four of his brothers. His only surviving brother is in critical condition.

“He is my only surviving brother. Our twin brothers aged 12 years and their elder brother aged 13 were all buried in the mud,” he stated.

William Lokapel is still trying to accept the fact that he had lost his three daughters. His three daughters are, however, not the only family members that he has lost.

“It is a big blow to the family having lost over five relatives at ago,” said Lokapel.

Leaders and Kenyans have joined in sending their messages of condolence to the bereaved families.
