President Uhuru Kenyatta will take up a new role as a champion of African Union culture and arts programme.
President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta of Mali convinced President Uhuru through a special message received at State House Mombasa on Friday January 10 to join him after he was elected to head the same.
The role of AU assembly is to choose heads of state from African countries tasked to create various awareness within the continent or internationally.
In a speech, President Uhuru affirmed that African culture is rich, promotes patriotism and provides employment for many people.
He said that culture promotes unity and continental integration.
He further said that Africans abroad should be brought together as one by the rich culture.
"I am keen on promoting our culture, our rich African culture which is our identity and heritage. You can count on our support on this,” he said.
President Uhuru stated that Kenya will choose two representatives in the technical team that is task to promote the cultural agenda.
"It is important to come up with a concrete agenda on culture and the arts that can be implemented and we need to work together to move this agenda forward,” Uhuru said.
The President will begin his new task after an official installment at AU meeting scheduled to take place in Addis Ababa in February.
