The Bangladeshi court has ordered for the removal of the word virgin from marriage registration forms in the country.
Initially, women had to declare if they are virgins, or "Kumali" in Bengali, a clause the High Court on Sunday withdrew and replaced it with "unmarried" or "Obibahita" in Bengali.
The court found the description humiliating to women but retained the other two categories; widow and divorced, with the changes expected to take full efffect in a few months.
Similarly, men will also be required to state their marital status henceforth, both following a petition that was filed by women lawyers in 2014.
Mohammed Ali, a local marriage registrar said that he has been repeatedly questioned on why men were not required to declare their marriage statuses like women.
"I have conducted many marriages in Dhaka and I have often been asked why men have the liberty to not disclose their status but women don't. I always told them this wasn't in my hands," he told Reuters.
On her side, lawyer Aynun Nahar Siddiqua welcomed the ruling, terming it a major milestone, and going that more is coming with rwgardsnti upholding women's rights.
"It is a landmark verdict," she told the paper.
