People infected with HIV do not have specific foods but specific diets can help fight the virus. HIV virus weakens one's body, causes infections and other opportunistic diseases.
Below are some foods that can help one avoid complications caused by HIV according to WebMD;
1. Fruits and vegetables
Fruits and vegetables are antioxidants meaning they help prevent cell damage. After every meal, one is advised to eat a plate full of fruits so that the body can have enough vitamins and minerals to fight the disastrous virus.
2. Proteins
Proteins are key immune system strengtheners and major muscle builders for underweight individuals. Beef, poultry, fish, eggs, beans, and nuts are the best protein sources one should consume (at least two in a day).
3. Whole grains
HIV deprives the body of energy. Whole grains contain carbohydrates necessary for energy production for both mechanical and metabolic activities of the body. Whole grains also contain energy vitamin B and fiber. Fiber can lower one's chances of acquiring lipodystrophy which is a potential side effect of HIV. Whole grains include barley, wheat, millet, and oatmeal.
4. Plenty of fluids
Water, for example, an HIV patient should take at least 10 glasses of water on a daily basis. Water carries nutrients and at the same time flush out excessive medication from the body. Fluids also keep the body hydrated.
