Every five years when the country conducs a general election, new faces always  join the political scene.

Some of these old faces started their political journey back at insitutions of Higher Learning where they were student leaders.

The Nyanza region has benefitted from these crop of leaders and some of them are controlling the region's politics at the moment.

Here are four former student leaders controlling Nyanza politics today:

1. James Orengo

He is currently the Leader of Minority in the Senate and Senator for Siaya County.  He is also the former Member of Parliament for Ugenya constituency. Before joining national politics, the Senior Counsel served as the Chair of the Student Organisation of Nairobi University (SONU), while studying law at the University of Nairobi. He held the position from 1972 to 1973. 

2. Moses Kajwang 

He is the current Senator for Homa Bay County. Kajwang' joined national politics after his elder brother Otieno Kajwang' passed on in November 2014.

During his time at Moi University where he was studying Information Sciences, the Senator served as a Student Representative in the Moi University Senate.

3. Gladys Wanga

She is currently the Homa Bay County Woman Representative.

The vocal politician was a Secretary General at the Kenyatta University Students’ Association (KUSA).

She was the first woman to hold the position. Wanga graduated with a  BSc and MSc in Health Management from the same university.

4. Prof Anyang' Nyong'o

The Kisumu County Governor served as a student leader during his time at Makerere University.
