Four suspected muggers were on Tuesday evening shot dead by police in Mlango Kubwa after police trailed them for hours.
The killings followed a security swoop by a contingent of special police unit drawn from the Flying Squad, GSU, and the Special Crimes Prevention Unit who were pursuing an unnamed gang that allegedly murdered an Administration Police officer on Sunday.
The security operatives recovered a pistol fully loaded with four rounds of ammunition after a three-hour shootout.
Confirming the Tuesday incident, Nairobi Police Commander Japheth Koome said a manhunt is ongoing for one suspect who finally escaped during the shoot out.
He said his officers pursued the gang after a tip-off from the members of public who informed them of the gang that was hiding in the area.
"They immediately started shooting from their hideouts when the police officers cornered them," Koome said.
He advised the public to be on the lookout as the escape suspect is armed and asked anyone with information to report to the nearest police station.
The gang is said to be behind the series of robberies in Kibera, Mathare and Kariobangi areas.
