Kibaki’s rule from 2002 to 2007 is considered as one of the best in Kenya’s history as it saw the Country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grow from a paltry 0.2% in 2002 to 6.1% in 2006.This was made possible by Kibaki’s Economic Recovery Strategy for wealth and employment creation (ERS).

 Divisive elections

According to www.wikipedia.com, Kenya vision 2030 was adopted from the ERS. It was launched in 2008 after a divisive election of 2007/2008.The country’s GDP dipped in 2008 because of post-election violence which rocked the country after allegations of election rigging. Raila Odinga alleged that his victory was stolen by Kibaki and the country went into flames. More than 100,000 people were killed and close to 600,000 displaced. Raila Odinga and Mwai Kibaki would later form a grand coalition government.

22 years

Kenya vision 2030 is the country’s development programme to run from 2008 to 2030, a span of 22 years. According to www.vision2030.go.ke, Its objective is to help transform Kenya into a newly industrialized, middle-income country providing a high quality of life to all its citizen by 2030 in a clean and secure environment.

3 Pillars

Kenya vision 2030 is based on 3 pillars; Economic, social and political. It is to be implemented in successive five-year plans. The vision focusses on reforms and development across 10 key sectors such as tourism, infrastructure, Education and training, Financial services, Manufacturing, Trade, Agriculture, public sector reforms, Science, technology and innovation, Business process outsourcing and information communication technology (ICT).

Oparanya

Another thing that you need to know about Kenya vision 2030 is that it was launched and adopted at a time when Wycliffe Oparanya was the minister of state for planning. Whether Kenya will achieve the vision is quite debatable. It is a tall order given the fact that the country failed to achieve the Millennium development goals (MDGs) which were also envisioned in Kenya vision 2030. The MDGs were to be achieved by 2015 but that did not happen.
