NTSA boss Francis Meja confirmed that 12 vehicles have been burnt following the Saturday night accident.

Witnesses at the scene said the driver of the tanker lost control and hit the other vehicle which created chain of knocks.

"It was unbelievable, there are bodies burnt beyond recognition. Many others were left nursing injuries some of them serious," said a witness.

Five GSU officers are among those who died in the grisly accident, after their car was hit by the truck.

The death toll could be much higher, considering the number of vehicles involved in the accident

Kenya Red Cross officials arrived at the scene moments later, but had a hard time due to the huge traffic snarl up.

A Red Cross official said rescuers had taken 30 bodies to Naivasha Sub County Hospital Mortuary.

Edwin Wafula, a survivor who suffered burns on his hand, told the Nation he was travelling to Nairobi in the company of four other people when their car caught fire.

“The fire caught cars on both sides of the road. The truck was coming from Nairobi, but those heading to the city were also burnt,” he said.

The accident happened even as doctors and nurses are on a nationwide strike.

The health workers are demanding implementation of a Collective Bargaining Agreement signed in June 2013.

The grievances they want addressed are; pay rise, hiring of more medics and improvement of working conditions in all hospitals.
