The county government of Uasin Gishu has embarked on an initiative meant to revive all dormant and collapsed cooperatives societies.County's Executive in charge of Cooperative and Enterprise Development Esther Mutai says despite the county having 600 registered cooperatives only 250 are active."As county government we are determined to ensure that in the next five years all collapsed cooperatives are operational through empowering them financially," Mutai said in Eldoret on Friday."Our aim is to ensure residents are empowered financially through joining,cooperatives where they can get loans at at a low interest of 5 percent," she added.The County Executive further reaffirmed their commitment to making cooperative movement bigger, viable and sustainable as a way of addressing joblessness among the youth.She also revealed plans to increase the cooperatives membership base."At the moment the actual membership of all cooperatives in the county is 65,000 people but we expect to reach 300,000 before 2022," Mutai said."We will do massive registration in each ward to accomplish this dream by sensitising residents on how to and the importance of joining cooperatives," she added.To be the first to get updates on breaking and trending news in Kenya, send your WhatsApp number to 074094990.
