The Judiciary has been urged to post at least five more judges in the North Rift region so as to address the current backlog of cases.

North Rift Law Society of Kenya (LSK) chairman Zephania Yego says shortage of judges at the Courts in Eldoret, Kapsabet and Kabarnet has led to many pending cases.

Speaking in Eldoret, Wednesday, Yego said at Eldoret Environment and Land Court only, there are over 4,000 pending cases.

The court that serves residents from the entire North Rift region has only two Judges.

"We are battling a big crisis of shortage of Judges in this region especially for the Land Court which serves over four counties and has only two Judges who are overwhelmed by the number of cases," Yego noted.

He said they recently raised the matter with the Chief Justice David Maraga with the hope that they will get a positive response from the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

"We asked the Chief Justice that at least a Judge for Environment and Land court be posted in Kapsabet High Court, another Judge be posted to the Kabarnet High Court and at least three more Judges here in Eldoret High Court," said the LSK North Rift chairman.
