Kiambu Deputy Governor James Nyoro has revealed that Sh1billion meant for health in the county was used on other projects.
Nyoro said the money was to be channelled to the hospitals and improvement of the county health sector through the county government.
Speaking at Ndumberi stadium in Kiambu, Nyoro said health funds for the last two years have been diverted and was being used to fund various unrelated projects in Kiambu.
The deputy governor said the county failed to remit the Conditional Grant from the National Government, the National Hospital Insurance Funds and the Facility Improvement Funds (FIF).
Nyoro said they will reimburse the money into the health department to ensure service delivery in the health sector is improved.
“I promise that we will never again use money meant for our hospitals in other areas as has happened before thereby depriving our health facilitates money meant to support them.”
“We will repay the money we owe the hospitals even if our budget will have to be constrained. Provision of high class and timely health services will continue to remain our key pillar of development in this county,” Nyoro said.
The deputy governor said the county has been suffering from lack of enough medical staff, dilapidated infrastructure, inadequate drugs and unreliable supply of drugs and non-medical supplies.
Nyoro, however, said they will construct a Central Medical Store at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital to ensure hospitals have drugs at all times.
“We are also committed to clear all outstanding debts with the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (Kemsa) so as to restore a sustainable relationship for the sake of continuous supply of drugs,” he added.
