Lawrence Njuguna, a 76-year-old man from Mwea village in Gatundu North has returned home after 41 years in Tanzania.
The story of this 'prodigal son' was highlighted by Citizen Digital on Friday, who had visited him at his home.
Njuguna said that he had gone outside the country looking for greener pastures. While in Tanzania, he used to work as a sand harvester.
“I have been thinking about the family but I was still guilty because of the way I left them. Lack of money to facilitate my return has also been a challenge until a volunteer gave me some money. I’m now happy to be home and I have no plans to return to Tanzania,” he told Citizen Digital.
According to the elderly man, he feared to return home as he had nothing to bring back to his family.
The father of nine, four boys and five girls noted that he even got help in getting the transport back to his home.
For all these years, Njuguna stated that he never communicated with his family since he never owned a mobile phone.
Surprisingly, he pointed out that he had forgotten the way back to his village.
He said that the car he had boarded dropped him in Thika, where he asked directions to his village.
Unfortunately, Njuguna came home to the sad news of the death of two of his children, who died a year after he left home.
His wife, Mary Nyathira, said that she was happy for his return.
