Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony of the county’s new officials, the first term county boss defended his decision to evict hawkers from the city centre.

The governor noted that the decision to kick out hawkers from the town is well-thought, adding that he has no plans to change his tune over the same.

He revealed that his government has allocated funds for securing a 23-acre parcel of land from Kenya Railways where a new market centre will be established.

“Hawkers are on the streets because of lack of proper establishments for their operation and we are going to offer them just that,” he said, as quoted by Standard.

Governor Nyong'o claimed that various donor-funded projects have stalled because of various challenges including resistance by the traders.

He said the county government will bar vehicles from accessing Ang’awa street, Kenyatta Avenue and Oginga Odinga, in a bid to ease congestion in the town.

During the event Governor Nyong'o welcomed newly appointed county attorney Victor Obondi and Health Executive Professor Judith Miguda-Attyang to his government.
