Police in Mombasa County have arrested a suspected drug trafficker in possession of 400 kilograms of bhang worth millions of shillings.
Confirming the arrest, Coast Region Police Commander Francis Wanjohi said the suspect was arrested in Mariakani Township along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.
Mr Wanjohi said police officers at the roadblock acted on intelligence reports and stopped a Toyota Caldina car that the suspect was using to ferry the bhang.
“The suspect who tried to escape jumped out of his vehicle and started running but he was apprehended by the officers. He was alone in his car and we suspect he was ferrying the drugs to Mombasa,” said Mr Wanjohi.
Speaking in Mombasa town, the police commander said the value of the drugs had not yet been established.
“The value of the bhang is yet to be established but once the police are done with investigations, the suspect will be taken to court,” said Wanjohi.
Coast Regional Coordinator Nelson Marwa who was also present during the briefing said the suspect identified as Tom Mboya alias Njiri, was arrested by police officers manning a roadblock in Mariakani.
“We believe the bhang was being ferried to Mombasa where it has a huge street value,” said Mr Marwa.
