A member of the security detail of Saudi Arabia's King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud security detail has been shot dead in what the kingdom's authorities say was a personal dispute.

Photos of Maj Gen Abdulaziz al-Fagham with the Saudi king were widely shared on social media accompanied by angry messages calling for the culprit to be brought to justice.

In one of the images shared, the slain bodyguard is pictured bending over to tie the shoe laces of his boss, King Salman.

According to the British Broadcasting Corporation, the shooting happened after Fagham went to visit a friend called Mamdouh bin Meshaal Al Ali who opened fire after a disagreement.

Fagham succumbed to his wounds in a hospital where he was undergoing treatment.

The death was reported by state television in a tweet on Sunday, keeping details of the deadly shooting to the barest minimum.

"Maj Gen Abdulaziz al-Fagham, bodyguard of the custodian of the two holy mosques, was shot dead following a personal dispute in Jeddah,” the tweet read.

Officials of the Saudi government have been posting their condolences on social media feeds, keen not to reveal the circumstances of the death.

Deaths caused by guns are rare in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The bodyguards was familiar to the people of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and was a long-serving security officer.
