The new year 2020 and beyond will shape the destination of Nairobi county political leadership.
The decision as to whether the current governor would be allowed by the court to carry on his responsibilities or would be permanently barred from office and a by-election held lies with the court of law.
In 2019, Kenyans especially Nairobians were treated to so much political drama after the City Hall top leaders found themselves on the wrong side of the law.
The Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko and the County Speaker Beatrice Elachi were contending with corruption-related court cases.
All eyes are on the High Court as Kenyans look up to it to conclusively determine the cases of the duo and shape the future political leadership of the county.
Sonko who had not appointed a deputy governor had been barred from accessing his office by the court pending the hearing of his case.
Therefore, it implies that Nairobi County is operating without a governor and a deputy (leaderless)! The county Assembly Speaker was also facing court charges and a fresh prospective impeachment motion set for her by the MCAs.
If in case Sonko will be acquitted of criminal charges facing him, then Nairobians will be relieved because their governor will resume office and continue delivering services.
However, if the court convicts the governor, then City Hall residents would have no option but to go for a by-election since Elachi could not act in Sonko's capacity due to wrangles in the County Assembly and her court case.
