The government has banned swimming at the famous Sagana Falls in Muruguru, Nyeri County.
According to the Central Regional Commissioner Wilfred Nyagwanga, he noted that swimming in the Sagana falls in tantamount to attempted suicide.
He called on the residents and tourists to avoid taking the risk which will not only endanger their lives but may also land them in jail.
“They can come for excursions but watch from a safe distance as this is a dangerous zone. If you are caught trying to get into the water, one can only assume you are attempting suicide so the law will take its course,” said Nyanwanga as quoted by the Daily Nation.
According to the commissioner, the water levels in the Sagana river have risen to higher levels making it dangerous to swim in various areas with other areas on the river mapped dangerous.
This comes days after a Dedan Kimathi University of Technology student drowned at the falls during an excursion. His body is yet to be recovered even after divers and the Nyeri County Disaster Management team camped at the river looking for his body. Partly the rescuers have said that the rains are hampering the retrieval operations.
The waterfalls are a tourist attraction site mainly for local tourists. However, some of them go ahead to swim at the falls not knowing the risks they are taking.
This is not the first time a life was lost at this river.
Back in 2018, 2 lives were lost. This was after the two decided to swim at the dangerous falls.
