The exact number of people who died is yet to be determined, but the authorities have confirmed that there were deaths at the burial ceremony in Kerman, Soleimani's home town.

Aljazeera reported that at least 35 people were killed in the incident, and scores others critically injured.

Thousands of people came out to bid farewell to the powerful commander, described as the architect of Iran's expansionist strategy in the Middle East.

"He [Soleimani] was seen as a great man who was ready to serve his people... He must certainly be avenged, " an 18-year old student who attended the burial ceremony said as quoted by BBC.

The stampede comes amid heightening tension between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States of America.

Iran has vowed to revenge the murder of Soleimani with a severe response.
