Central Regional Coordinator Wilfred Nyagwanga has issued a stern warning to brokers taking advantage of innocent Kenyans seeking birth certificates in Kiambu.
Nyagwanga said action will be taken against brokers operating outside the Thika Civil Registration offices.
He said they have received complaints from residents that brokers are asking for bribes in order to speed up issuance of birth certificates.
Nyagwanga who visited the offices on Wednesday warned civil registrars who are colluding with brokers to demand for bribes before issuing birth or death certificates.
“Civil registration officers should avoid short-cuts and exercise professionalism in their work. Again, from the complaints received, we shall not allow brokers to dictate to our officers how to work. Any of them found hovering around the offices will be arrested and face the law for fraud,” said Nyagwanga.
Some of the residents claimed that some employees from the Thika registration office were deliberately making the systems inefficient to ensure those seeking services give out bribes.
Thika Civil Registrar Mary Muriuki has, however, said that the process is fast and that the only challenge they are facing is lack of books that have the slips to process the birth certificates.
