The Senate will from Tuesday interrogate the charges against Waititu as forwarded from the Kiambu County Assembly, and either approve or reject them.

Kang'ata observed there have been excessive stealing in devolved units and asked his colleagues to support President Uhuru Kenyatta's efforts to fight corruption, by backing impeachment of at least one governor.

In a tweet on Monday, the outspoken Senator hoped Waititu will be the first county boss to be sent home, to serve as a warning to other governors engaging in the plundering of public funds.

"Our counties have been looted left, right and center. Atleast one chief executive of a county needs to go home to send the right message. Senate needs to support HE efforts of fighting corruption. Tomorrow at the Senate's proceedings for Kiambu County- may be this is it!" Kang'ata posted.

Waititu was impeached by Kiambu MCAs on December 19, 2019, over allegations of engaging in corrupt dealings, abuse of office and gross misconduct.

The governor's impeachment has also been supported by ODM Director of Political Affairs Opiyo Wandayi who has asked party Senators to stand with Kiambu residents and ensure Waititu is ousted.

"We ask all ODM senators to stand with the people of Kiambu. Those who will support the besieged governor will be supporting corruption," Wandayi said on Sunday.
