Speaker Trevor Mellard held in his arms and fed the one month old baby of Tamati Coffey as debate was going on in the House.

He tweeted a photo of himself rocking the baby and went on to congratulate the baby's parents.

"Normally the speaker's chair is only used by presiding officers but today a VIP took the chair with me. Congratulations @tamaticoffey and Tim on the newest member of your family," Trevor Mallard tweeted.

The speaker soothed the baby as he ensured that the lawmakers observed the rules and time limits while making their contributions to the debate at hand.

Mallard relaxed rules two years ago to ensure that Parliament was child-friendly.

New Zealand has made tremendous progress in ensuring that the rights of women are upheld.

In 2018, the country's Prime Minister became the first leader in the history of the country to have a baby while in office.

In countries like Kenya, bringing a child to Parliament is unusual and frowned upon.

A few weeks ago, Woman Rep Zulekha Hassan was thrown out of the chamber after bringing her baby to the House, sparking widespread revulsion from women in the country.
