Secretary-General Raphael Tuju on Sunday said the party will be electing substantive officeholders across the country including the national level.

This will force President Uhuru Kenyatta to seek mandate as the party leader since he's holding the position on an interim basis.

However, former party Vice Chairman David Murathe told the 'Nation' that Uhuru will still remain firm as the party leader of Jubilee.

“Why is the clamour for elections coming from them?” asked Mr Murathe. "Them” in his question referring to Ruto allies.

“Let them know and understand that the President will remain the party leader come rain or shine and if they have plans to contest that, let them bring it on. The earlier, the better.”

It is highly anticipated that Deputy President William Ruto could go for party leadership position next year given that he's preparing for 2022 polls.

Majority Leader Aden Duale accused Secretary-General Raphael Tuju of making draconian pronouncements. Tuju had earlier said that the party will not allow corrupt leaders to contest March 2020 polls.

“Jubilee has NEC, the board of secretariat and a parliamentary group and is not run by an individual called Mr Tuju,” Mr Duale said Sunday.

Should Uhuru stay put within Jubilee, this could be a big blow to Dr Ruto, who is keen to capture the party leadership.
