ODM leader Raila Odinga has congratulated Kenya's Ruth Chepngetich after she won the Women's Marathon at the World Championships.
"Congratulations Ruth Chepngetich on a powerful run to win the Women’s Marathon in Doha, well done. The first Gold medal at this year’s #WorldAthleticsChamps You have done proud. Hongera" he tweeted on Saturday.
International athlete Briton Charlotte Purdue was among those who opted to pull out of the competition when the temperatures became too high for her at 32 degrees celsius and with humidity reaching over 70 per cent.
The organisers of the event had to allow the contest to continue despite different stakeholders raising concern that the conditions were likely not to be favourable when it comes to marathons.
Ethiopia's marathon coach Haji Adillo Roba was left without words to mince after his trio opted to drop out of the race. The three included Tokyo Marathon winner Ruti Aga.
Roba said that he was saddened by the twist of events but also hailed the winners of the competition for bracing the hot temperatures to emerge victorious during the contest.
We never would have run a marathon in these conditions in our own country," he told BBC Sport during the race. "I'll be interested to see how many finish."
Chepngetich has become an internet sensation after she won the medal for the country.
