Police in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, are holding an elderly man in custody over claims of eloping with an underage girl.
The suspect, 65, is being held at the Eldoret Central Police Station, as police investigate allegations that he eloped with a 14-year-old girl from Kakamega.
The incident was confirmed by Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Johnstone Ipaara, who said police are working with the Children Department on the matter.
“The matter is now recorded in the Children Department and the suspect will be presented in the court on Monday," he said.
Children rights advocate Kerubo Makroti said she led the operation that recovered the girl from the man's house, where she claims she (the girl) was being held captive.
She told the Standard that the girl had been warned against talking to anyone.
"I was told a girl had been seen at his home, and when I went there I found them taking lunch,” she said.
The girl was taken for medical examination at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, with attempts to get in touch with her parents having kicked off.
We are working with the Kakamega County Children Department to trace her parents,” County Children's Officer Diana Jeruto said.
