Veteran politician Koigi Wa Wamwere now wants governors facing corruption charges detained in police custody, until their cases are heard and determined.
Speaking on Saturday, the former Subukia MP argued that by releasing them on bond, the courts are allowing the county bosses a chance to interfere with witnesses in their cases.
He said though those whose cases are going on have been barred from accessing their offices, they can still access the witnesses outside offices, either directly or through emissaries.
Therefore, he wants them locked up in police custody until the end of their cases, to ensure that they don't get any chance to interact with people involved in their cases.
"If given a chance to tamper with the cases they will use it. The only solution is denying them bail. (Wakipewa nafasi ya kuingilia kesi watazitumia. Ili kuzuia kuharibiwa kwa ushahidi, dawa tu ni kuwanyima dhamana)," he said on Radio Sauti Ya Mwananchi on Saturday evening.
According to Wamwere, there is need to ensure cases run smoothly, to avoid instances where witnesses end up withdrawing or recanting their statements.
He said given that majority of such people are very rich, it becomes very easy interfering with those helping the prosecution in their cases.
"Even when out of office, they can still tamper with with cases because they have lots of money. (Hata kama hawafiki ofisini bado wanaweza ingilia kesi kwa sababu wako na pesa nyingi za kuboronga kesi)," he added.
So far, governors; Mike Sonko (Nairobi), Moses Lenolkulal (Samburu) and Ferdinand Waititu (Kiambu) have been locked out of office, after being charged with graft.
