The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) now wants to be furnished with payment records from international insurance companies offering medical cover to Kenyans.
In line with its purge on tax evasion, the authority has since ordered the firms to hand over the information, as it seeks to establish taxes due from doctors and medical staff under them.
In a letter seen by Business Daily, KRA says the move is aimed at ensuring the tax burden is shared among equally by bringing all practitioners under the tax bracket.
"The authority is amplifying its efforts to ensure that all medical practitioners are within the tax brackets to facilitate fair distribution of the tax burden and ensure the payment of commensurate taxes," it reads in part.
This comes only months after the authority slapped local insurance providers with the same demand, in a bid to identify medical practitioners who have been evading tax.
"We hereby request you to provide data on payments to doctors, dentists, pharmacists and medical service providers. KRA hereby requests for data for the period January 2015 to December 2018. The data should preferably be in Excel format," read the letter.
International firms targeted include; InterGlobal Insurance Company, Cigna International Limited, and AXA PPP Healthcare, which also enjoy a clientele of wealthy Kenyans.
This comes amid a similar purge on leading betting sites in the country, some of whom have since been banned over claims of evading taxes, including SportPesa and Betin Kenya.
