Speaking on Sunday during a wide-ranging panel discussion aired on Standard Media Group-owned Kenya Television Network, Mr Bichachi contended that the penchant of Kenyan politicians for big budgets is informed by their corrupt nature.

The bigger the budget, the easier it becomes to steal, the television analyst appeared to suggest.

"Our political class, by and large and by their own admission, are mostly focused on stealing, and if you are focused on stealing then you want the govt budget to be as big as possible..., " Mark Bichachi said.

His intervention comes amid huge public concern over the loss of public funds through corruption.

A Reuters article in 2016 claimed that about a third of the country's budget is lost to corruption.

The government is involved in an ongoing fight against the plunder of public coffers by corrupt public officials.

Governors, cabinet secretaries, and other public servants are being investigated over corruption.

Among county bosses grappling with graft charges are Kiambu and Samburu governors Ferdinand Waititu and Moses Lenolkulal respectively.

The governor of Nairobi is also facing the prospect of prosecution over corruption as the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) investigates him.

Treasury cabinet secretary Henry Rotich was forced to step down over corruption in what is being viewed as perhaps the strongest signal from the government that it is keen on fighting graft.
