The city constituency has witnessed high octane politics in the last three weeks with slightly over a month before by-elections in the region.

The seat was left vacant following the death of Ken Okoth. IEBC has cleared seven candidates for the race which has attracted national interest.

At Kapseret on Sunday, Dr Ruto, who supports Jubilee candidate McDonald Mariga, said that the party will ensure it bags the seat from ODM.

“I was shocked when an individual laid claim that Kibra is their political bedroom and the region did not even have toilets and locals are grappling with dire sanitation challenges. It is the Jubilee government that built roads and public toilets in Kibra,” he said.

Dr Ruto is keen to give ODM a run for their money in a constituency that has traditionally backed Raila Odinga. Mr Odinga was MP for 20 years.

But Itumbi has criticised the Standard Group paper, arguing that the race in Kibra has little to do with Mr Odinga and Deputy President William Ruto.

"Sometimes, headlines are the creative imagination of Sub-Editors. The race in Kibra is between candidates cleared by their political parties.

"Reading the story by @StandardKenya there is no single quote that supports the headline. DP @WilliamsRuto addressed issues. Media Spin!" he said.

Ruto's camp has been having issues with Standard Group, with Dr Ruto often poking holes at the media house. It's closely linked to retired President Daniel Moi's family.

Others in the race include Imran Okoth of ODM, Raila's former aide Eliud Owalo of Amani National Congress and Eng Ramadhan Khamisi of Ford Kenya.
