Apart from stress, poor diet and age, other factors have been linked to this condition.

Here are some of the many factors that could be causing the condition

1. Hormonal imbalances

According to Michele Green, a dermatologist, thyroid disease or PCOS are the factors causing stagnant hair growth.

These scourges create hormonal imbalances which inhibits the growth of keratin cells known for promoting hair growth. Other conditions such as alopecia are believed to contribute to the condition as well.

 2. Hair miniaturization

Another scientist by the name Lars Skjoth, a founder and head of research and devekoe for Harklinikken shed light on this matter by citing that, the condition is just a genetic disorder and associated with family history.

"The main cause of stunted hair growth is what is known as hair miniaturization caused by hereditary hair thinning," Skjoth explains.

The author further noted that, "Miniaturization of hair follicles is a process that occurs naturally in those who have a predisposition to androgenetic hair thinning, during which your follicle shrinks in size. A general rule of thumb when it comes to hair length is that the deeper-set your follicle is, the longer your hair is capable of growing. However, miniaturized hair follicles cannot grow very long hairs—they produce hairs that are weaker, duller, and more prone to breakage."

3. Disease

Biologically, the hair follicles shed to be replaced with new hair after growing.

In individuals with diseases like pneumonia, it is believed the stress of the illness afflicts the hair follicles and make them to stop growing.
