The Technical University of Kenya (TU-K) has made history by being the first-ever Kenyan university to conduct a parent-student orientation.
TU-K Vice-Chancellor Prof Francis Aduol revealed that this decision was arrived at to help students in their academic journey while at the university.
He pointed out that parents/guardians were called to help talk to their students on vices such as betting, drug abuse and other social ills.
According to Prof Aduol, students joining the university are still young and need close monitoring, thus the orientation with their parents is a way of showing support to them as they kick start their new life at the university.
“Assuming that these students are mature enough to take care of themselves is not bad, but remember they are still young and they can be lured easily into doing things you as parents would not like to see or hear. It’s the duty of everyone to provide financial, moral and emotional supports to them,’’ he said.
During the orientation, various things were discussed. The VC warned students against the bad company and other unwanted habits while at the university.
“Nairobi is a big but complicated city. Be wary of conmen. Don’t allow them to ruin your life,” he cautioned them.
He urged students to always seek guidance whenever they are in a problem and not to take decisions that might hurt their lives or those of their fellow students.
The university admitted a total of 1,925 students.
