Area assistant chief Josphat Ngumbi Sikuku said the fire was caused by a lamp that the deceased left on.

The local administrator said the man was drunk at the time of the incident.

"On reaching home, he lit a lamp and dozed off to sleep leaving the lamp on. His brother said he saw him at around 11pm and he was really drunk," Sikuku said.

Sikuku told the press that the man lived alone and was not married, adding that by the time the fire was put off, the man had already burnt beyond recognition.

"I rushed to the scene with other residents to help put out the fire but, unfortunately we could not save the man because by the time we got him out,  he was already dead," he said.

The body of the deceased was moved to Mbaku funeral home in Matuu.

The local administrator urged residents to ensure safety of their kin to avert such incidents.

"The brother knew the man was dead drunk but didn't even put off the lamp before leaving him, it is sad that a life is gone.

"Residents should look after their relatives who drink a lot and ensure their safety," the chief said.
