President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed the former Marsabit governor following the sacking of Henry Rotich, who is facing charges for alleged embezzlement of Sh21 billon meant for construction of Kimwarer and Arror dams.

“I thank the President for the honour and trust he has bestowed on me by appointing me as the acting cabinet secretary for the treasury. I promise to do my best to realise the dreams of transforming this nation,” Yattani stated after his appointment.

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has dismissed the appointment, arguing that he could turn out to be the worst Treasury CS if permanently appointed. He also accused him of leaning towards Embrace team.

“He is a factional CS who is inclined more to the Embrace movement,” Mr Cherargei said, referring to the lobby of female MPs traversing the country to campaign for the unity deal between President Kenyatta and Mr Odinga.

Embrace team consists of women leaders who lean towards the handshake. In the past, they have been accused of supporting secretly Raila Odinga's presidential bid.

Dr William Ruto backed the current Marsabit Governor Mohamud Mohamed, who is not in good terms with Yattani. He is allied to President Uhuru Kenyatta.

But a number of Senators have welcomed the appointment, wwith Kiambu Senator Kimani Wamatangi challenging Dr Yatani to ensure that he brings to closure the dispute on revenue.

“As a pioneer governor, we believe he brings to the table a different approach over the issue,” he said.

“The appointment is timely because it brings balance and refreshing thoughts at the Treasury, and I’m confident the matter of revenue will be resolved amicably,” added Senator Johnson Sakaja.
