The name Amos Wako is not strange to anyone who has been closely following Kenya's politics for decades now given his roles in various public offices.

When the United States dropped a bombshell about him on Monday, it was probably expected given his controversial years as Kenya's Attorney General.

"Section 7031(c) provides that, in cases where the Secretary of State has credible information that officials of foreign governments have been involved in significant corruption, those individuals and their immediate family members are ineligible for entry into the United States," US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo said in a statement, as quoted by the Star, when announcing Wako's designation.

"Today’s action sends a strong signal that the United States is a valuable partner in Kenya’s fight against corruption. The United States will continue to stand with all Kenyans as they strive to curb and punish corruption in Kenya," the statement added.

Born in 1945, Wako attended prestigious Alliance High School and London School of Economics. Thereafter, he proceeded to the University of Dar es Salaam.

It's in Tanzania where he studied law which he's best known for. Wako served as Law Society of Kenya (LSK) chairman from 1979 to 1981 before joining human rights groups.

In 1991, President Daniel Moi appointed him to State Law office, a position which he served for two decades. He had taken over from Guy Muli.

While serving as Attorney General, Wako encountered the Goldenberg scandal, which is perhaps one of the major reasons he has been haunted by corruption cases.

In what looked like a miracle, he joined Raila Odinga's ODM party in 2012, a year after handing over to Prof Githu Muigai. Throughout his tenure as AG, Wako was often at loggerheads with Mr Odinga.

During the 2008 Post Election Violence, Wako mediated on behalf of retired President Mwai Kibaki. But after joining ODM, Mr Wako has been keen on Mr Odinga's inner circle.

Last year, he was trusted by Mr Odinga to sit in the Building Bridges Initiative team, which was constituted by President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila to handle the ethnic antagonism in Kenya.

The team is yet to deliver a report to the two leaders.

Mr Wako's latest woes with the US could likely paint a negative picture on the BBI team.

The second term Busia senator is said to be planning to run for the county's gubernatorial seat. He's among those who advise Mr Odinga on serious political moves.
