Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago on Thursday led residents in planting 2,000 bamboo tree in a bid to attain 10 percent forest cover in Kapseret Forest.
Through a post in the County Government of Uasin Gishu Facebook page, the environment department noted that it's targetting to plant a total of 5,000 bamboo tree seedlings by Monday.
The Kapseret Forest which was gazetted in the 1960s was chosen as a demonstration center to initiate the bamboo tree planting exercise in the county.
Speaking during the exercise, Governor Mandago urged residents to plant more trees in their farms other than the ones planted by the county.
"Each individual has a task of conserving the environment for us and our future generations, therefore, let's do it like never before. You should always seek professional guidance from the Kenya Forest Services (KFS)," said Governor Mandago.
“I call upon residents to plant more trees as a way of curbing rapid climate change which is becoming a threat to our lives,” said the county boss.
Environment CeC Mary Njogu disclosed that Kapseret Sub-County has been chosen to be the first one to receive the bamboo tree seedlings, and urged residents to protect them.
She further enlightened the residents on the benefits of bamboo trees, noting that they are the best in air purification, reducing soil erosion and also cleaning water among other benefits.
