Three people were left dead in Mombasa County after a canoe that they were travelling in capsized on the Marimani-Maunguja stretch in Mwakirunge Ward.

The accident which took place on Friday claimed the lives of Wilfred Jira Kaimu, his sister Scarlett Mare Kaimu, and her son Braven Kaimu.

The bodies of the three victims were recovered and buried.

According to James Kobe, the victims were forced to use the Indian Ocean after the main roads became impassable due to the ongoing heavy rains.

“Wilfred Jira Kaimu was steering the canoe before it capsized. He was helping his sister and the baby cross over from Voroni village in Rabai to join their relatives who live across the creek. They decided to use the Indian Ocean after the main road became impassable following the heavy rains,” Kobe stated as quoted by the Daily Nation.

Mombasa County Governor Hassan Joho has advised the area residents to be cautious when using the channel to avoid similar occurrences.

Mombasa County Kenya Red Cross Director Mohammed Rajab reported the following areas as being prone to floods and landslides; Chaani, Mikindani, Jomvu Kuu, Bamburi, Junda, Kiembeni and Kadzandani, Moroto slums, Ganjoni, Majengo, Kona Mpya, Consolata Catholic Church, and Shika Adabu.

Heavy rains and floods have been witnessed in various parts of the country.
