President Uhuru Kenyatta has joined other world leaders in mourning the death of Sultan Qaboos bin Said.
The Oman leader died on Saturday morning in what state media described as a "long battle with Colon Cancer".
Said, who was born in 1940, seized powers from his own father in 1970 after a bloodless coup. He's credited for engineering social-economic changes in the gulf nation.
President Kenyatta described the late Sultan Qaboos as a visionary and charismatic leader who was committed to the transformation of his country.
“Sultan Qaboos was a great leader who was devoted to improving the well-being of his fellow countrymen. He was also committed to international peace and worked hard towards promoting peace and stability in the Middle East," President Kenyatta said.
“May the Almighty God comfort the people of Oman as they mourn this great leader. We will forever cherish his contribution to human development through his generosity whose fruits are enjoyed by many in the international community,” the President added.
Since 2015, the Sultan has been battling illness with reports indicating that he was admitted in Germany for 8 months.
Major power crisis looms in Oman given that the Sultan did not have siblings and children, complicating the inheritance arrangements.
