The Eldoret officers suspect that the metallic pieces were obtained through the vandalisation of railway lines, which is illegal.

"In the vehicle, there were rail metals (Gari kulikuweko na vyuma vya reli), " a police officer involved in the investigations into how the rail parts were obtained told KTN on Wednesday.

The driver of the lorry was arrested and questioned, and later released on a cash bail as investigations continue.

Police say that they believe that a network of individuals are involved in the vandalisation of railway lines for selfish gain.

They are, therefore, expected to cast the net for suspects even wider.

Suspects risk being charged with economic sabotage as vandalisation of infrastructure constitutes to economic sabotage.

Law enforcement authorities will be exploring leads as to whether members of the top brass of the Kenya Railways were involved in the scheme.

It is suspected that the vandalised parts are sold as scrap metal.

The Jubilee government has made the improvement of the rail network in the country as part of its infrastructural development agenda.
