Kisii county police officers have arrested 42 vehicles and 11 motorcycles in a crackdown on unroadworthy vehicles in the county.
The operation was done by police officers in collaboration with National Transport Safety Authority from South Nyanza.
Addressing the press on Monday in Kisii town during the crackdown Mr Peter Owade, who headed the NTSA unit said a majority of vehicles in the county were operating with faulty speed governors.
The operation was done in Kisii town and along the Kisii-Marani road and among the vehicles impounded were mainly Proboxes.
Police officers removed the number plates from the impounded vehicles during the operation.
“High percentage of vehicles in the region are operating with faulty stickers despite the authority's attempt to sensitise the public on traffic rules," said Owade.
He also accused PSV operators of tampering with speed governors and inspection stickers and urged PSV operators whose vehicle number plates had been confiscated would not be allowed back on the roads until they had complied with traffic regulations.
The Kisii County police Commander Agnes Mudambi said that the officers seized 42 vehicles, 11 motorcycles and arrested 17 passengers who had broken traffic rules.
Mudambi vowed to continue with the crackdown until sanity is restored in the public transport sector.
"Already we have compiled a database of serial offenders and will forward it to the NTSA for action. This will include the cancellation of licenses," she said.
