Writing on his Twitter on Saturday, the country's second in command said that he would continue offering his support to the church.

In his tweet, the DP also pledged to strengthen the relationship between the state and the church with a view of creating a more united country.

"We will continue supporting the church, build and reinforce its friendship with the State so as to have a stronger and united country, " the Deputy President's tweet read.

Ruto also noted that the government recognised the important role that the church plays, saying that the church is instrumental in efforts to bring about unity.

"The Government cherishes the essential role the church plays as a change and development agent; it forges harmony in our society, and shapes the form and quality of our political and social systems, " he said.

The DP has been subject to blistering criticism over his hefty donations to religious institutions. His critics have charged that the donations he makes are the proceeds of corrupt dealings.
